One last antique- chair from France?
« on: February 14, 2010, 08:08:47 pm »
Sorry to bother you all once more, but I realized that I have a piece of furniture the appraiser didn't know much about. From my own research I think it is French, but I am by far no expert. I assume it is a 19th century piece, and all hand carved. If anyone could tell me more about it I would greatly appreciate it! A value and date would be nice, as well.

Thanks!

The design is that of a French Bergere chair. but american produced. I would be asking $ 450.00 Dollars.

Thanks for that D&b.  I knew it was French....but didn't appear as French made!

A bergère chair is a large arm chair  -  France - French Country style.  It is upholstered with exposed wooden framework, usually has a loose pillow/cushion  and is usually accompanied by an ottoman.
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

it Has a Distressed OR depressed eagle on the front of the chair. never find that on french furniture. would likely find one on federal style furniture. but wrong style.

But I bet it's comfortable.

The bird doesn't look like an eagle to me. The shape of the head is more falcon like, although the posture is certainly much the same as a federal eagle would be. The body is also very interesting. I don't see any sign of flames like it is a phoenix, it sure is different. Beautiful, deep carvings on the chair. Good score for $50 I'd say!!

Thanks! I was rather surprised at the piece myself! Interesting note on the eagle, as well. Hard to tell but it does look a bit odd.
