Given an infinite supply of money, what would you buy?
« on: February 16, 2010, 02:31:43 am »
I was looking through some auction catalogues tonight and began to wonder what I would purchase if I came into the possession of an infinite supply of money. So my question to you: what antiques would you buy?

My top four are as follows:

This for starters.
You need a place to keep your antiques right?

Now this question is just way too hard to answer! But I'd buy a ton of Revolutionary War items, medieval arms and armor, bustle dresses...too many things to list! And of course, I'd have to have a few victorian or colonial homes to keep everthing in.

No such thing as an 'infinite' amount of money but, if I had a lot, it would be a 429 Shelby Cobra sports car.  Next, would be a luxury log cabin in Jackson Hole, WY with a view to die for.  Next would be antiques and paintings of the American West.  You asked...  ;D

No such thing as an 'infinite' amount of money but.....

Now if we could only get the US government to see it that way, then maybe our grandchildren would have hope for a future country.

Fun question Luxetveritas, by the way. Thanks for posting it.

1. The Orpheus Saloon in downtown San Jose. It was a notorious saloon with a brothel upstairs and the girls would all be on display in the upper windows. It even had a marble tiles running up the front of the bar and a gutter running the length of it. This served as both a spittoon and a place where patrons could relieve themselves without having to step away from the bar! The old tiles are still visible though a panel in the floorboards. Sadly the building has been gutted. If "I Were Queen" I would gather up whatever I could find in the way of relics from the days when the street it is on (El Dorado Street was renamed Post Street in an effort to clean up its image) which was San Jose's red light district, and open a small museum dedicated to preserving the history of El Dorado Street. Good or bad, it's still history and very few people know what this place was like back in it's wild west days during the 1870's through about 1910.

2. A 1930 Bentley 8 Litre.

More on this later!

Do you mean the car or the brothel?!!  :o

LOL sorry Dean, that was just too good of a set-up for me to let it go! I agree, I think the Bentley 8 Litre is one of the most beautiful cars ever made.

Speaking quite personally, I would buy Classical Chinese furniture (huanghuali, zitan, etc) instead of my MUCH less expensive Country furniture.  I'd also go to live in China for 2-3 years to try to learn Mandarin, and to read some characters.

OK, so I'm dreaming!!  I know it.  I also know I'm just lucky to be able to dream
