Antique Cheese Safe
« on: February 28, 2010, 09:47:35 am »
In going through my mother's estate, we have found an antique cheese box that my grandparent's used in their store.  It is called the Knight Cheese Safe, pat. Feb 11, 1879, mfg. by A.T. Whitaker. It is made of wood and has glass on the sides.... Does anyone know anything about these or the value? we are cleaning out her house to get the estate closed out.  thank you.  I am a new member and hope that I did this right..

I don't see alot of information about your specific cheese safe but I did find this one for sale on eBay and if it's close to what yours looks like it will give you a good current idea of what they are fetching. Welcome to the forum!

Traditionally this type of cupboard had holes bored in the sides/back, so that air could circulate inside.  It was also used for bread, cheese and/or butter.

Sorry, I couldn't get to my mother's today to take pics, but will one day soon... this one would sit on a counter, it is probably about the length and width of a portable dishwasher, has a door that opens up on the front, windows in the sides and yes I am sure it has vents also..

thanx for all the comments, checking for me.. I wished I had of found this forum sooner....

Totally off subject but I see a phonograph in the background! By any chance are you going to be finding it a new home, too?

First I know very little about these kinds of things, but I see a lack of dovetails and kind of a bit modern looking to be from the late 1800's.  Would look nice with all the kitchen stuff that has been showing up  ;D

Hosman, with that handle on it ........ it looks more like a sewing machine case to me.

And Ironlord, it was most probably put together via "mortise n' tenon" joints or a remote chance it could be dowel pins.
