Very true Ironlord.  They used to make utensils out of lead until they realized it was "unhealthy"! Was very common in Europe.  In fact I think we had this discussion sometime in the past....like December of 2008! 
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

Has it been that long?  :o   There is still a bit of a ? on this item.  I did find Frederick Marquand Hallmarks and they match pretty good.  But he was born in 1799, and he did Silver.  So the Numbers are still in question as it being a date, and why Lead.  Maybe I'll have to revisit my first Antique mystery.

Reading this topic made me think of a few old kitchen items that belonged to my great grandmother who came over to the US from Germany with her father who was a baker by trade. This knife  is something I use all the time, I think it has some lead on it between the handle and blade.
