Looking for identification and price info
« on: May 23, 2010, 08:43:48 am »
Hello everyone, I purchased this at an estate sale yesterday - i'm not certain where this is from, the age or value. Any information would be much appreciated. I paid around 20$ for it.

The person who the estate sale was for was a big collector of cuban pottery but i do not think this is cuban - it reminds me of some of the pottery i've seen from Portugal or Mexico. I could not find the signature anywhere online. I'm positive that it's hand painted and even if it's crap i still love this thing. i think it's wonderful and it goes very well with my chinese furniture in my dining room.

Thanks in advance!

Nice pitcher , BobInVirginia .

My guess is that your item is from the Amalfi coast , in Italy .
I think it's Italian , anyways ... just has a Tuscan feel/design .

Somehow , in my mind , I see this pitcher being used for lemonade , or a combo of it & Limoncello (an Amalfi liqueur) .

Amalfi area has motifs/colors/styles like yours .... also home of a species of large & wrinkly lemons (sfusato amalfitano) .

I like it !

Thank you so much! The Italian hint gave me what I needed. This is a piece of pottery from Deruta Italy. What i've found is:

This Renaissance pattern was inspired by Raphael’s fresco, often adorned with stylized mythic animals. The dragon, in particular, was a benevolent deity, granting good luck and fair winds to the seagoing merchants, as symbolized by the puffs of wind steaming from its mouth.

I'm having a wonderful time browsing sites looking for the same shapes. So much Fun!

Glad you found the information you needed.'
These type of items are fairly common at "kitchen stores"  in the larger cities in my area (Texas).  The coloring and style are very marketable!
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!
