Want to Guesstimate the Age on my Rolling Pin?
« on: May 27, 2010, 04:22:07 pm »
I picked up this rustic antique rolling pin, not only because my mother is about to teach me to bake pies, but I was also looking for one that would look good sitting out on the possum belly Hoosier that you kindly helped me to restore!  :)

It looks to be homemade. Although clearly made on a lathe, it is not quite symmetrical, the handles are slightly different sizes when you grip them and the grooves are not quite the same on each end of the rolling pin. There is a lot of wear, age cracks and discoloration. According to the Ebay seller it came from, it was from the inventory of an aquired antiques store. I paid $5.00 so I can't go too wrong!

I'm taking a guessimate at 1900-ish, based on the age cracks, wear and patina, taking into account that although it was used indoors, it would have been exposed to water for washing, damp dough etc.

Anyone care to take a stab at how old it might be?
