very old sliding lid teapot.
« on: June 04, 2010, 02:13:41 am »
Can anyone help identify this very old sliding lid teapot which belonged to me great aunt who I spent my summers with some 60 years ago, and she always said it was a wedgwood. I also have a wedgwood simple yet perfect teapot which was also hers and which I now know all about through the wedgwood museum (very helpful people), but this sliding lid one they are still looking at, no clues yet.

there are no markings other than 22 stamped on the base

so any one know anything??

thanks

Pfftttt, if I'd looked a little closer at one of the links I gave you I would have come up with this......

(can't fit the whole address in, so go here and click 'SHOW HITS)

http://www.culturalmodes.norfolk.gov.uk/projects/nmaspub5.asp?page=search3&indexIndex=Who%3F&filename=d%3A%5Cmuseums%5Cmodes%5Cp_deca2.mdf&indexList=Sowter+and+Co.&submitButton=Go%21

Also this one, another that mentions the impressed mark '22'......

So it appears yours is likely made by Sowter & Co, Mexborough Potteries, very early 1800's   ;)

VERY nice teapot! Without damage I'd say it would bring about $800 at an auction house like Skinners. Nice piece!

Thanks for your comments all. The damage is reparable if a collector so wishes, the museum site that I was referred to actually had a similar pot with the same problem and had completed a repair, and thankfully they actually said so. anyway I have put it on ebay USA to see what it attracts.

JUST A THOUGHT IF THERE ARE ANY TEA POT ""COLLECTORS" OUT THERE INTERESTED THEN CERTAINLY I AM OPEN TO OFFERS AS I AM NOT A COLLECTOR OF TEAPOTS, (""OLD TRAINS YES"") AND THIS WOULD BE BETTER OFF CLEANED AND POSSIBLY REPAIRED BUT CERTAINLY HANDLED BY AN EXPERT, ITS SO OLD IT FRIGHTENS ME TO TOUCH IT!!

THANKS AGAIN
