Need Quick ID on Electroplated Silver Warming Dish
« on: June 17, 2010, 04:07:26 pm »
I am coming up empty-handed trying to locate the maker of this neat little egg... OK it's a chafing dish, or warming tray. I have an appointment to go check it out Saturday, but want to make sure it's antique before I go. Here are the hallmarks. Can any of you locate the maker and help me get an approximate date on this piece?

Here is the piece:

Here are the hallmarks, with EPNS (Electroplated Nickle Silver) at the bottom:

One question- I shared the hallmark information with the seller and he has asked the following:

"I am not changing the price but am curious what the current value of such an item would be.......I am not a collector nor am I trying to bleed money from someone............ .I am just curious what the value of the gift was that I am selling for $50.00/"

I'm giving him a link to this forum topic so that he can see your replies. Could someone respond on the value of the warmer for him? He is selling it to me for $50, which I felt is a fair price that is in line for electroplate.

Thanks.

I would say that such a unique silverplate item like this is worth $50.00. That's seems a fair price, not a steal of a price and better then O.K..  I could see someone getting a bit more if they waited for the right moment.

I looked around at what electroplated antique chafing dishes were going for on Ebay and buy it now prices ranged from $10 to about $150. I wasn't able to find this exact type up for sale anywhere though, so it is difficult to make a comparison.

This one does have a few things really going for it.  Really nice period feet, Unique looking, also from the period when Silverplate was on the top of the world, Not a post 40's Holiday version.   Appears to have all the pieces with it, and a glass insert.  probably not original but if is, that would be another bonus.  It has a wonderful overall art work Scrolled on the surface, Looks stamped but still has character.  Overall it is worth the money IMO, and would looking stunning in a period style kitchen as your Tales.

Ironlord, many pieces did have glass inserts.

What are the dimension of the piece?

Nice looking!

A little bigger than the stove burner it is sitting on, LOL! I'm afraid that is all I know. It looks like a smaller one I think. Maybe the size of a football. I'm going to pick it up on Saturday so I'll know more then.

I'm curious why the serial number appears to have been scratched out, then restamped. Just correcting an error I guess, but I've never seen that before. And thanks for the input above on the value!

I brought the "Egg on Legs" home today and I'm really pleased with it:

A little Wright's Silver Polish cleaned it up beautifully:

The scrollwork is formed in the metal, not just stamped, although the background texture is hand stamped. It's much nicer than I thought it would be:

Up-close on the scroll work:

The legs are pretty cool too, they have claw feet with little talons:

That little button on the lifting handle is ivory. I checked it with my jewelers loupe and it has a distinct criss-crossing grain. Unfortunately the seller lost the lower half, so I will have to make do with a washer and a nut to hold it in place.

There are two thumbscrews that tighten on either side of the lid so that it doesn't fall open. They unscrew and come apart so that you can remove take the whole egg apart for cleaning. The screws are marked "patent" but that's all it says.

The two interior pans are original and both are marked EPNS so they are electroplated nickel silver like the rest of the Egg. Each piece of it is struck with EPNS.

The alien ship has landed on my dining table...

It's BEAUTIFUL !!! I'm betting you're more than pleased with it (I sure would be)

Now I'll have to clean up and take pics of the silver plated cruet set I got at a yard sale
last weekend!! Would look real nice side by side with your 'egg'  ;)

I'd love to see the cruett Sapphire!

A little additional history on the "Egg on Legs". It was a wedding gift to the seller seven years ago from John Brandshaw, who is the author/personal growth guy who wrote books such as "Homecoming: Reclaiming Your Inner Child", "Healing the Shame the Binds You" and others. He is apparently an avid antique collector:
