Looks to me to be some sort of large charm or 'fob' for keys. I wouldn't think it could be classified as
even vintage though, judging by the length of the girl's skirt.

Any idea what type of metal it's made of, any manuf. marks anywhere?

I agree with sapphire, it looks newer as the girl's dress is above her knees and is probably a charm or something.  The boy inside and the girl outside look cartoonish.  I can't quite make out the names but it looks like "Beauty & Genius".

I agree that it's probably a modern charm for a charm bracelet. A lot of them moveable with things that open and close like this one. Does it say "Beauty vs. Genius" or just "Beauty Genius"? I think either way its message is either about choosing one or the other, or about being able to be both.

The piece just seems a little too big for a charm bracelet, doesn't it? I'm definitely no expert when it comes to jewelry though...

I'd go with the keychain/fob idea , perhaps one intended for a pretty violinist .

Good point, looking back at the lighter it does seem too big. Maybe a pendant?
