Boston Rocker and Duncan Phyfe Dropleaf Table
« on: June 28, 2010, 12:56:05 pm »
Okay, I probably have just enough information to really frustrate everyone.
Here's the short version: The pieces (that are in pieces!) in the photos belonged to my grandmother who passed away recently. They were destroyed when I was rear-ended by an irresponsible driver. Now I have to make an insurance claim on them.

All that's left are these photos that were taken by a friend while my wife and I were hospitalized after the accident. The salvage company and/or insurance company disposed of the wrecked pieces before we had a chance to recover them.

I believe I've identified the table as a Duncan Phyfe Drop Leaf Table with Brass Paw Feet. Circa 1930.

The chair I'm a little more sketchy on. The seat, back, arms, and spindles all seem to be in line with the style of a Boston Rocker. However, the chair was not painted, but had a natural finish. How unusual is it to find an unpainted Boston Rocker?

Trying to put a value on them is giving me a migraine. They don't seem particularly rare or valuable, and I seriously doubt I'm going to get anywhere with a "sentimental value" argument.

Any feedback on my identification of these pieces would be most appreciated. And if anyone has had experience dealing with insurance companies on claims like this, I'd appreciate your insight.

Best,
Bill

I'm glad you're OK!  :o Sorry to hear that Grandma's things were not so fortunate. Your photos aren't showing up, can you try reposting them?

Not sure what's up with the photos.
I see them now.
Are you seeing them?

Nope. I tried going to the photo properties, lifiting the URL and pasting it in and it came back as unauthorized. I think that me.com does not allow you to link to outside sites. You can upload the photos here by following these instructions: http://www.antique-shop.com/forums/index.php?topic=4165.0 or at http://www.photobucket.com, which allows you to link to outside sources.

Nope, not seeing as well.

I don't believe that your insurance company will take the valuations from this site to the bank...but it can be good for reference.

So sorry to heard of your hardship and loss. Hopefully we can help to lift your spirits here.

Agree with KC. there likely going to require, a certified appraisal. and they are only required to pay replacement cost. as far as the paint on the rocker I would'nt worry about that.

Don't know if it will help or not, but here are two examples of unpainted Boston rockers being sold on the SF Bay Area and Monterey Craigslists for over $300 and $375. The price is probably a little high if you ask me, but it might help to make your case with the insurance co. It can't hurt to print these out and fax them over to your agent.

$ 350.00 is the going rate for a Boston Rocker. the table site unseen. $ 250.00 to $ 300.00 Dollars. the higher values, are due to the fact you have to find them and replace.
