dont know what it is
« on: June 28, 2010, 06:39:05 pm »
we bought this item in a box of old tools and have no idea what it is. It is the size and shape of a bowling pin, if you stand it up like a bowling pin the bottom looks like a 3 bladed chisel of sorts. It is made of cast metal and is solid and weighs about 12-15 lbs. thanks to any one who knows what it is

Welcome to the forum mongo.  Without pics it's rather hard to visualize your item. Great helpful people here who might either
know or be able to find out for you. Looking forward to seeing your 'what is it"  ;)

It appears to be iron for sure, my guess would be some kind of wedge, but I don't feel too sure about that.  I can't wait to see how this one end.

Looks like it might be a huge Morse taper alignment tool ( keywayed Morse tapers) possibly for manual rotation of machines/machine heads , among other possibilities......

It's a locking/self-aligning tool of some sort for sure ....unless I'm wrong (again) .

In light of the next post , perhaps it's a mold-separation tool .

Something that has a handle, is about 14" long and weighs about 12-15 lbs. would not be a “hand tool” in my opinion because it would require 2 hands and a strong armed person to use it.

Therefore me thinks it is an “alignment” tool of some sorts that is noninfrequently used (inserted) and then removed.

Mongo , I'm wondering if all 3 'blades' on your item taper up to form (3) wedges ?
