Royal Copley Pottery
« on: July 12, 2010, 08:59:38 pm »
I have this item that I purchased for $4.00 at a thrift store, actually the better half convience me it would sale on Ebay, so I went ahead, well I posted it on Sunday for $7.00, right away someone wrote me and told me that it is a Royal Copley and it is very collectiable, well it seems in less then a day it not only got a bid, but now it is up to $31.00, appears I have a early battle for this cute kitty planter pot.  What can anyone tell me about Royal Copley and why is this item getting that much intrest.  I did find lots of Royal Copley stuff some are pretty high dollar, but most seems to float around 10 to 15 dollars.  I'm happy that the bids are going well but am I missing something here?

I don't know doodley squat about Royal Copley things, but just wanted to comment that your example looks like a mighty fine one, ironlord1963!

Hope the bidding war continues on the same pace, till there's just one left standing.

Originally sold in five-and-ten-cent stores during the 1940s and 50s, expertly modeled and colorfully decorated Royal Copley figurines, banks, planters, and other items have become one of today's hottest ceramic collectibles.
Items trimmed in gold are worth 25% to 50% more than the same item with no gold trim
Spaulding China Company, the pottery that manufactured Royal Copley in Sebring, Ohio.
also produced two other major lines- Royal Windsor and Spaulding.

O.k. $61.00 and climbing I hope  :D   Still kinda of a awe about this one, most of the other Royal copley don't seem to do this well, guess it is just a cat fight going on.

Me thinks it is because it is a cat figurine that the fight is going on.

cogar, my older daughter and I were reading these together today....and we couldn't stop laughing about your comment!  LOL

I have seen Royal Copley items around for years....just don't know what the extra-uniqueness is about this one.  Granted haven't seen this one before...but they have 1,000's of art figurine planters!

Let the cat fight continue - it is great for you!

I was just looking at the basket the kitten is sitting in- I think that's an old-style baby bassinet, the way it rises up in th back as the hood, and with the ruffle around the bottom, plus the legs. It also looks like a blue and pink theme so that it would be given for a baby boy or baby girl. I am betting that is what it's original use was, to hold flowers given to a new mother.

...and here's an antique wicker model bassinet without the ruffles. Note the woven sides on your kitten's basket:

Hey Ironlord, maybe yours is getting some action because it's unique. I didn't see any others like it in the listings. By the way, does Royal Copley have any kind of identifying mark?

Yea it may be the uniqueness of the item, maybe these hardcore copley collectors know something I don't (of course that would not be hard)  ;)  Anyway as for markings there is not markings but one of the links that sapphire or ginger gave me, mentioned they had paper labels, so most would be unmarked, or rather missing their label.  There was also lots of pointer on how to spot them, this piece meets the test, bright airbrushed glazed over finish, lot of cute animal items and many planter pots.  In the 40's and 50's you would find these but the tons in the Five and Dime store, and everybody I have ask a bit older then I remembers them.  You can bet I will be looking out for more.  Still I think it boils down to a early cat fight for this item and caused lots of attention.  One person bid it to $31.00 I went to look at their profile and it appears this person bought and sold Royal Copley items.  Be the person that looks for any clues, will use this as a gauge per say.  If this person bids again, then I think it is something really special. If not it's value I will call the $30.00 to $40.00 range.  Anyway no new bids today but lots more views and a new watcher, bringing it to 6 watchers.  This is pretty good for one of my items on Ebay, and will be my biggest sale to date.  I think that is pretty good for my Junior year of this  ;)
