Just bought this antique bedroom set
« on: July 17, 2010, 11:11:43 am »
So I found this at a yard sale in a small rural town.  I was told it was close to 100 years old.  I actually got two stories about where it was bought from.  One told me it came from a furniture place in Ripley, WV called Vails or Vales Furniture and then I was told it was shipped in from an unknown furniture place in N.C.  I've always had an attraction to antiques but this is my first real collection I guess you'd say.  Don't know where to look or what to look for.  I just know that the drawers are all dove-tailed and it looks to be hand carved with veneer inserts???  Any info on what to do, look, etc. would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for your time.

I can get better pictures once I put it in my place.  These were taken on-site when I bought it.

OK...so I found a sticker on the back that says Caldwell Furniture Company, Lenoir, North Carolina.  No date and all I can find on the company is that they merged with Thomasville Furniture in 1968.  Anyone know anything about it or how I can find out when the company was in business from the beginning?

I believe the best places too look would be the bottom side of the items or possibly the legs for any type of writing, printing, carving, or sticker... Good Luck...:D

Great advice from Hybrid. Stickers or other indentifying info can be in very odd places. Check inside doors, under the bottom of the pieces or on the back. Use a flashlight and check every inch! Even partial stickers can help. If you can't find anything, hopefully someone else on the forum can help with identification. Good luck!
