Help with Unknown horse tack
« on: July 22, 2010, 07:27:32 pm »
This is a piece of horse tack (fly veil?) which fits over a horse's entire
face. Things I would like to know are:
where it was made, who made it, how old it is, and it’s value.
This is 16 inches across the top, 10 inches down the
sides, the thin leather strips are 12 inches long. The metal circles all over the front of it, appear to be
brass. They are attached with leather. Two of the larger circles, in the top two outer corners have two stars each, embossed, on them.
The back side is braided over all. The places for the
horse's eyes to look through are braided. The 1 inch
wide leather strip that travels down the nose has the
brass circles and a white leather tassel at the end.
There is a strap with a buckle that goes behind the
ears and another for under the head.
The seller of this item said she bought it overseas when her husband was stationed in Tehran. Her only other comment was that horses wore them on the desert.
I will greatly appreciate your knowledge of this
piece.
Thank you very much,
kdj

Interesting tack item , kdj .

Lots of conchos & braided leather leads me to guess (I don't know for sure) that it's a vintage parade/Mardi Gras item .

Others with much more horsie experience here on the forum , so lets see what they say !

Are there any slight/light markings on back side of leather?
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

What kind of marks am I looking for? On the back side, there are only slanted marks from the brass being attached. Please see picture of back and of the embossed stars.
The seller of this item said she bought it overseas when her husband was stationed in Tehran. Her only other comment was that horses wore them on the desert.
A hearty thanks if anyone knows more.

I knew it looked like something out of "The Black Stallion".  Don't know the proper name for it so finding it hard to locate anything similar.  Maybe if you try contacting Arabian horse clubs who often outfit their horses with authentic or replica tack they would be able to give you some info as to what it's called which would make the search easier.

Thank you! I've had this piece for over 35 years. I have searched previously, but found no one who knew. That search included US and European museums and every horse affiliated web site I could think of. Everyone was so kind to respond but no one had seen anything like it. I'm still hoping someone will see it and know something.

Will keep searching.......the re's got to be a 'proper' name for this that will lead to more info.  Bedouin keeps coming to mind

Don't give up  ;)

I believe it's just a fancy headstall. Obviously these ones are new but same general idea.

Yep, the top strap likely goes over the horse's ears, and the other strap and buckle are likely either used to attach it where the browband would normally be, or over an existing browband on the bridle.

May be a case of having to wait for a moderator to come online.  If they're all 'working' folk, then it may take a bit. I know I've sometimes waited a couple of days for confirmation.  ;)
