Need information on Burmese Tapestry Please..
« on: August 30, 2010, 06:42:37 pm »
Found this Tapestry in Georgia at a swap meet around 15 yrs. ago.  From what I can tell it is a Burmese Tapestries or Kalagas.
Does anyone have any information on how to date these or origin etc.,?  It is aprox 3 ft. tall X 2 ft. wide.  Thank you so much..

I don't know anything about them, but perhaps these sites might help you out a little??

Just out of curiosity, where in Georgia did you get them? I used to live in Atlanta, and used to shop the big shows there, and really miss them!

Hi ThisNThat, sorry about the delay in answering.  My husband and I visit Haiawassee Georgia every few years. If your not familiar with the name it's in the cusp of North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia.  There is a huge lake called Chatuge there and it's so beautiful.  Anyway, found this at a place outside of Murphy N.C. A huge swap meet called Deckers.

There are books out on the tapestries if you want to go that far http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kalagas-Burmese-Embroided-Tapestries-VHS/dp/B00004VVT5

Yours looks fairly new (not antique which is 100 years +).  Interestingly enough, these depict tapestries more common to Thailand (elephant, lion and antelope).

These are great for tourist trade.

The first known was/is in a temple and has been a traditional art ever since.  The most noted are from Myanmar - Mandalay.

I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!
