Hancocks...

In one of my Boston newspapers, dated 1796, there is an ad. The ad is for (I believe) ship deliveries of some sort. From Boston to Philadelphia. It says to apply to T. and J. Hancock. Well, John was dead by this time and so was his uncle Thomas. John's children didn't live past their teen years. So who were these two Hancocks in Boston in 1796? Just curious because the whole time I've had this paper, I thought it was John. Kinda disappointed to see that it's not.

   Have you checked out for information on the Schooner?  Maybe this would lead to a clue.  BTW pretty cool you share the same birthday a J. Hancock, but would have to say You don't look that old in your pic.

Is the schooner just named "John"?  This ship might be very hard to get info on. All records of the ship, or even this shipping company could be lost, or else just very hard to find. It may require looking through old shipping records in some library somwhere.

Here's what I'm thinking:
Peter Coffin was the shipmaster. The schooner was named John after John Hancock. Maybe the company name was "T. and J. Hancock" even after they both died. I'll search to see if the company was T. and J. Hancock. All of this isn't really a huge deal, I guess I just like to know what I have and what I'm talking about when I show items to people. And we'll all get a history lesson, I suppose.

What I was able to find out (from wikipedia) is that a Thomas Hancock was John's uncle, and when Tom died he left his shipping buisness and his fortune to John. That explains the "T" in "T and J".

Yeah, I posted that up there Skinny but thank you for searching for me! I guess it was just the company name and they were both gone. Guess there's no big mystery with this one, thanks for the help though.
