Help finding info on Antique? bedroom set
« on: September 02, 2010, 01:14:33 pm »
Ok...I bought this set at a garage sale.  The owner bought it at an estate sale where he was told it was bought for a woman by her husband on their wedding night nearly 100 years ago.  The only thing I could find on the furniture was part of an old sticker that said Caldwell Furniture Company in Lenoir, NC.  I tried finding a history on the company but all I could find was something about a merge with Thomasville Furniture in 1968.  The drawers are all put together with dovetail cuts which are pretty rough and not symetrical at all.  Also the wood appliques look hand carved and so do the designs on it.  There are also accents that were stained lighter and looks like swirls with a paint brush in them to make a design.  I took some pictures with my phone but the quality isn't the best.  I would appreciate any help with finding out what the history is and if it's worth anything.  Thank you for your time.

I see this has been veiwed over 20 times but no one seems to have any replies.  Is there something else I can add that would help?  Is there something I should look for?  I looked it over pretty good and couldn't find any names, numbers or anything other than the one sticker.  Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Caldwell Furniture Company was a small furniture company in Caldwell County, Lenoir, NC.  Dates of sale are conflicting between Kincaid Furniture/Thomasville Furniture History and Armstrong.

It was absorbed by Thomasville Furniture Company in 1968. http://www.fundinguniverse.com/company-histories/Thomasville-Furniture-Industries-Inc-Company-History.html It then became part of
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armstrong_World_Industries
In 1964, Armstrong bought Phoenix Chair Company, following up with Founders Furniture Company in 1965, Western Carolina Furniture Company in 1966, and both Thomasville Furniture and Caldwell Furniture in 1968.

I know it was in operation in 1924 because J Wade Kincaid was working there in 1924 (ripe old age of 14 years old) assembling drawers and then worked his way up to Plant Manager - and in 1946 he left Caldwell furniture to open his own furniture company, the well known Kincaid furniture company to have their own fleet of over-the-road trucks and was later to become the La-Z-Boy Company still in operation today.

The furniture business developed form 1 furniture company (Hickory Furniture) in the late 1800's to 5 companies in 1907.  So, It was after 1907.

I do not know much about furniture but your set looks to be in very nice condition and everything matches.  If you like it and it fits your decor, then that should be the main thing.  Also furniture from years ago was made much better than something similarly priced today.  Wood veneer is much better than vinyl veneer and even "with dovetail cuts which are pretty rough and not symetrical at all", that is much better than particle board, in my opinion.

Thank you so much for the info on the furniture company.  I'm not an expert by far but I guessed the furniture was from the 20's.  I feel like I got a bargain only having paid $300 for the whole set and it is in GREAT shape.  The casters all roll smoothly as do the drawers.  I bought it because I loved it.  I have no intention on selling it because I do think old furniture is made much better and it also has so much character.  I really just wanted to know more about it and it's possible worth.  Again...thanks for the info so far.
