Larkin J Mead JR. Profile
« on: September 29, 2010, 05:46:43 pm »
Hi,

My father has owned this profile for quite some time and estimates it's date of origin to be somewhere in the early / mid 1800's. Any information on the artist and value of the piece is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

There was a Larkin Goldsmith Mead who was a sculptor who lived from 1835 to 1910. Are you saying that this is the artist and that this is a self-portrait? Looking at the photo of him below, I think this looks like he could the subject, but he is considerably thinner in the photo.

The profile appears to be quite well done but looking at the subject's style of clothing, I would guess it dates more to the mid 1900s than the 1800s.  JMO.

An early albumen pic of Larkin Goldsmith Mead Jr., the prominent Vermont sculptor.  Judging by the way the hair is always parted on the left side, I do not think the profile is a self-portrait.  Probability, are there any markings on the back of the profile?
