hoosier cabinet

Here's my fil's hoosier.  I'm trying to price it out.  We're thinking at least $500...  Anyone know anything about oil lamps too?

$500 looks to be about average for what people are asking for them now. Here's a whole list of Hoosiers currently up on Craigslist in the SF Bay Area for comparison.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind keeping it but it doesn't really go with the rest of our decor.  He has a roll top desk too that I want, I ALWAYS wanted one, but it wouldn't hold all my computer equipment... I just don't want my house starting to look like a garage sale...even though he has some really cool stuff.

That is the part I had to come to realization as well.  There are so many things that I TRULY like....but....whic h ones are the ones that I want to have in my home.  Sometimes you just have to learn to appreciate the beauty/history of items and relish in the moments you see them without having to own them.

What I do is pick a theme for each room or build a theme around one antique piece in the room. My bedroom and livingroom have Chinese antiques, Victorian in the dining room, Victorian with bold black/white/red in the bathroom, and in the kitchen, it's all cobalt blue w/white, with rustic "kitcheny things" that match the Hoosier. Each them ends at the doorway and I don't mix items from one room with another. That way I get to endulge in a lot of different things I like and each room has a different feel to it.

We have a single theme throughout ... it's called 'work-in-progress'   ;)

Nice one KC  ;D

You must also be psychic ... I was at my sister's and BIL's today sorting out the electrics in their bathroom... I always give a sigh of relief if I manage to complete a job like that without any major injuries!!!

tales, I wish I had thought to take out my camera while I was at My Favourite Thrift Shop in Vancouver a couple of weeks ago. There was a Chinese cabinet......don't know what kind you would call it, just sitting there begging for a home. Seemed all it needed was a good polish. It was a good 5 1/2 ft tall and likely 4 ft wide. A myriad of doors, all with brass trim and hinges. I didn't even dare ask the price because generally their prices are 'grab and run' tempting. You would have fallen in love in 5 seconds and hauled it south with you.

This is the closest to what it looked like that I've found.....except the one I saw had several more smaller size individual doors. Just killed me to walk out the door.  :'(
