Do you consider this Federal period?
« on: December 18, 2010, 11:57:06 pm »
i got this from a house that was before the turn of the century. It's a transom. It was near 2nd and Girard in Phila. I took 200 years of paint off because it was a mess.

Cool.Did you happen to get  photos of it on the house before it was removed and before your paint removal.Maybe it would add value and history to this nice looking piece.

LOL, hopefully if you removed paint with heat/torch you did it outside as the paint likely had lead in it. Very nice window.

I would think that you could date the window by the date of the house it came from since it had been there a long time and had many layers of paint it is probably a fairly safe bet that it is original to the house.

A few more pics would help, especially of the wood. I agree about the lead paint. Have to be extremely careful with antiques, they can be dangerous! My guess is victorian, 1870 or later.

There are pictures. I have to find them. They maybe lost. I do have a map from my grandfather, but I can't get the area big enough. Is that why I have brain damage, lol I cleaned it in an open garage with a mask.

I talked to my husband and he says the house was built in 1890's to 1905. The patterns of the glass are fascinating.

That's for sure. Someone bought me a gift saying it was old stainglass and I questioned it right away, because I know the difference.

The laurel wreath was used a lot in Victorian stained windows - this particular style was used most often to represent "honor" such as for military.  Can't tell much more on yours without being there personally.

Do you know anything about quality of original stained glass?

The stained glass is all original. This peice fit at the top of a door. I'm going to research the neighborhood and the houses built in that time period. I want to see if I can find the person who made this. I question was it built with the house was built and put inall of the houses. I'm sure they all had transoms, but was the stained glass an extra.

Also, trying to figure out if it was original to the house....was it from another one and brought to this one....or added later?   The search is on!!!
