Couch...
« on: January 07, 2011, 08:51:07 pm »
Didn't want to keep hijacking tales' thread, so I figured I'd start my own for this sofa.
Just curious how old ya'll think it is. I was thinking the 20's-ish. I hope it's not newer than that. When I first put it on hold I thought it was older, but those metal wheels don't look as old as I thought. I will take a picture of one soon. After hauling that monster inside, I just want to sit for a minute. Of course, I never measure anything. It is 10" too long for the space I had in mind. So, I had rip apart the antiques room so it has a temporary home in there. Excuse the messy carpet after the tornado in there. ;)

It is super springy and super thick! I just noticed the water stain on the right. Can't see it in person but my camera brings it out. Needs a bit of cleaning, I suppose.

I love those springy Victorian couches! Are you sure that's a waterstain and not just a shadow from where the springs/padding is?

Yeah, it's a water stain. When I shine light on it I can see it. I may clean it a bit with warm water.

Or a little spray rug and upholstery cleaner. Does it match your place or are you going to reupholster?

I think I'll leave it. I like the dark fabric. Even the mister said he likes it because it's fancy yet still somewhat masculine. Not all flowery or pink or loud and obnoxious. Although I do love dark red and gold....

It looks like a nice, tasteful fabric. If it matches and Hubby likes it, you're good to go!

I was figuring 1920 - 1930.

Nice looking piece you have there!

Whatever the age its very cool and stylish.Looks so inviting and a pleasure to see this kind of furniture.Seems like its in pretty nice shape too.If it were mine it would be lights out and listening to early broadcast of The Shadow.I'm jealous.

You have a lovely sofa there Hosman. Most importantly you both like it and it's comfy!

I'm no expert on casters, but they look quite old from your photo. I've been crawling around the house on my knees looking at ours. We have a late Victorian/early Edwardian barley-twist cottage suite, they have pierced casters, but condition looks the same as your photo. We also have a Victorian Iron & Brass bed, solid casters, again very similar to yours (a good job that I did look as I just noticed that one was damaged!).

It looks in lovely condition, and I'd say that it's certainly no later than 20s - 30s ... but others may have a more informed opinion.

Nice find!

Yes, those are cast iron casters with metal wheels and should date pre-1920 or 30. I'm not sure when they quit with the "casting" of the iron wheel bracket and started "stamping" them out of sheet steel. But whenever it was it would have been a tremendous cost savings.

OOPs, forgot, me thinks that looks more like a daybed than it does a couch.

Thanks for the input guys! The wheels do look like cast iron and brass. I'd be pretty happy if it were late Victorian, that's what I was hoping for. I have been looking for a site that explains antique casters better but I think I'm going to have to hit up the library to look for a book. Haven't done that in a very long time!

I agree with ya Dean, it is very inviting. I feel like I need to go light a candle in there and lay down with a book. This kind of furniture just takes me back in time for a moment.

Oh, and is the veneer mahogany? I just realized it matches my old ogee clock. ;)

Well, originally it was a rich red fabric. My favorite color. Eventually I think I will get it reupholstered. It was done very poorly and all the seams show on the front and the seat and they aren't even straight seams. No big deal though, it's fine for now. I'll just clean it. Besides, I'm not moving that thing again any time soon!
