Hi,

That looks like a very interesting piece.

O du Wunderschoner Deutscher Rhein is most probably the tune that it plays, it is a very popular (or was) German song.

What are its dimensions? Could you photograph the back, including any joints and the music box key. Can you access the music box itself? If so, a photo of that could be very useful in dating it.

Came across these, but as I'm not a member I can't access asking/realized prices.  The first shows one that appears to be quite close to yours, the second although no picture, by description would be the same. Still checking.  ;)

Well done Sapphire... I was tearing my hair out trying to think of 'diorama' !!!

Here is one without the music box and a little tattier, but fetching a nice price.

Johnale found this one and the bench against the wall looks to be almost an exact match.      http://cgi.ebay.com/GERMAN-DIORAMA-SHADOW-BOX-3D-CARVED-WOOD-HOUSE-/190460139141?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c584f1685

Another.....

http://auctionwally.com/ask/2009/10/28/what-is-this-its-called-a-diorama.html

"AW says:  That’s called a diorama, many would call it a “shadowbox diorama”.  It’s a “Black Forest” piece out of Germany, circa 1910-40."

Can you imagine how much fun it must have been to put one of these together?  Or at least to conceive and/or repro (for the DIYourselfer/crafter)?  Kind of like a doll house window for the wall...
