Went back and bought the clock!!
« on: January 25, 2011, 11:54:30 am »
At least I left my options open in my message to Hosman on Sunday !
I went back to take another look at the clock and bought it for £60 (c $90) ... But only just. When I arrived at the corner where the clock was there was another chap taking a great deal of interest in it, so I hovered. and hovered, thinking if he buys it, well, c'est la vie.

After about 5 minutes of poking around in it he disappeared, so I took another look, and decided that it really was worth the original asking price, never mind the agreed price of £60. So I grabbed it and went to a counter, and saw the same chap standing there, looking very unhappy at me holding 'his' clock. The actual clock owner works at the centre, recalled the discussion that took place on Sunday and we agreed on the £60. Even before money changed hands, the other customer was offering to buy it off me, for £90! I declined. I felt really quite guilty at getting the clock so cheaply, and for stealing it from under that chap's nose! But that is life  ;D

I've done some homework, and the maker (probably of the cabinet) was a William A Colpman of Wellingborough Northamptonshire, but can't find anything else about him.

The Dial is in dire need of restoration, but she works beautifully and really sounds sweet.

The actual clock movement could be American, I haven't taken it apart yet, but it is a very interesting Pendulum, with a Fast / Slow Indicator, which I am sure is from the States (I've seen Ansonia ones similar that fetch $40 just for the pendulum). there is a Pat Number which I'll have to check  (I think it reads March 1st 1881).

I'm pleased with it ... I'll have to tell my wife it's an early Birthday present to myself!

Nice find Mario!!  I think it was meant to be yours seeing how you showed up just in time.  When looking at the small pic I thought the two decorative pieces at the top (on each side) were motorcycles!!  hehehe

This page has a link to a short paper for a cost...  but it says:

Colpman, William A of Wellingborough and Kings Lynn A brief document giving some working dates for William A Colpman of Wellingborough and Kings Lynn. This page shows 4 photos of a clock with his name on it. (07 Apr 2008)

Very pretty clock! Now you need an Eastlake rocker to match it! LOL!

What a lovely idea ... can you send me one?  ;D

You know that when you buy something, say a Beetle, then you start noticing them everywhere? Well, we went to two Antique Centres over the weekend, and I returned to one today, and I found myself unintentionally looking for rockers ... NOT ONE! I think I mentioned earlier in the thread that we just don't see them much over here. Plenty of modern ones, but very few antique ones ... otherwise my wife would be sitting in one right now!

And thanks to Oceans I will now forever see a pair of Easy Rider Penny Farthings whenever I look at the clock!!   ;D

Subscribed for a single item and got some  info on the maker.

William A Colpman was born in 1861 in Peterborough.

By 1881, William, now 20, had moved away from home and he was lodging at All Saints Street, Kings Lynn. He gave his occupation as ‘Watchmaker’. By 1890, William A was listed in the local traded directory as working at 9 Sheep Street, Wellingborough. In the 1891 census William gave his age as 33 (born 1858) and was head of the household at 9 Sheep Street and was a watchmaker. He was living there with a housekeeper/domestic lady.

By 1898, William had moved to 8 Market Street and in 1901 William(38) was listed in the census as head of the household at Market Street and still gave his occupation as a watchmaker. He was living there with his wife Catherine E (40). In the 1903 Kellys directory of Northamptonshire trade directory William was still trading at 8 Market Street. William was no longer listed in any Northamptonshire trade directories I have from 1906 onwards.

There are 4 photos but all of the same clock.

Looks like he wasn't very prolific..
