Ebay madness?
« on: February 11, 2011, 05:48:17 am »
I had a collection of medals (WW1) and Morgan and Peace Dollars collected since I was in shorts. 3 - 4 years ago I started adding to it, but suddenly realised that they really didn't mean much to me any more, so I sold them off (except for a couple of pieces that I got from my father). I decided that if I was going to collect small, silver bits, then they should be things that we can use on a daily basis, such as silver napkin rings, egg cups, flatware and so on. And the collection is slowly growing and we are using them almost on a daily basis.

About three weeks back I picked up a lovely 1930s napkin ring, 1 1/4 oz, with my initials (oh vanity!) for c £16 (c$26 ?), so a lot less than the scrap value. That was the cheapest yet, but I don't think I've paid more than £24 (all in) and they tend to be c 1 1/2 oz (I avoid the lightweight ones as they wouldn't stand up to regular use), which is still probably less than scrap value. A couple of days ago I was bidding on another napkin ring with my wife's initials, roughly the same period, a few gr lighter, nothing special about the maker .. and it goes for £62 !!   ::) ::) ::)  I'm pretty sure that I researched the piece well and didn't miss anything?

Today I took delivery of another silver egg cup (useful when you've got hens!) ... from the TSS Vandyck, not yet checked the date but am pretty sure it dates from 1938 the year before it was commissioned by the Govt. and a year before it was sunk in action. Regardless of the history of the piece, it weighs over 1 oz ..cost me £21 all in  ::)  Probably used on the First Class Deck. It makes me imagine what it must have been like back in the Golden days of the World Cruises ...  It isn't the price of this little cup, but its history!

I am sure there is logic there somewhere, or maybe punters are just not spotting these things?

You can not outguess ebay buyers !! I picked up a napkin holder a while back for $.25 at a garage sale. I thought it was brass but could have been plate, dated 1934 but couldn`t really see the last number well. It was from Port Lines Steamship Co. I found out from looking it up on the net. Figured it might sell for $10. It was even bent a little on one side.  Wound up selling for $35. !! Sure shocked me !! You just never know who is looking at any one time. Or what they are willing to spend to out bid you !!  I would say you got a pretty good deal on your silver bits !!  I have found silver at sales for almost nothing here. Seems no one wants to clean it !!

I have never seen a silver napkin ring or egg cup at a garage sale in my part of the Midwest (or much silver for that matter) so you are lucky.  What something sells for on eBay has no rhyme or reason, only bidders that compete with each other for stuff they want.  Hopefully, when you post something for sale, they are competing for what you are selling or bargains will be had.  Kind of like real auctions.  The right people have to show up at the same auction to bring the $.  When I go, I hope they are somewhere else.

It is hallmarked Sheffield 1938, and so was probably used for the final cruise that the Vandyck made.

Here's a little history of the ship ... so much for so little  :)

Make sure you polish it.  I had a sterling cigarette case left as found and priced below (just below) scrap value with 0 takers.  If I relist it, I am going to hand polish it until it gleams.  Not what I like to do but evidently silver must be polished?

I think it seems to depend upon whether you are buying from an auction or ebay... ???

My experience is that ebayers seem to like shiny images, nicely polished. Whereas buyers at auction like to see their silver in its original condition ... but only my opinion  ;D

The egg cup seller hadn't cleaned it at all. One other bidder placed a bid on the starting amount (which was quite high), I was the only other bidder and I won with my  first bid. Almost unheard of for egg cups, they are so collectable over her, and one from a cruise liner that went down in 1940 ??

So, Mart, clean it and take a beautiful photo, and your $1 could turn into $30 (throw in free postage and I might even bid for it  ;D ) unless of course you fall in love with it and decide to keep it!

Well, I went back and she still had it, although she re-priced it to $3.00. It was unique as it had three handles and three pour spouts. Odd, but in thinking about it,, one could lift and pour from three sides  without turning it around so I guess it isn`t so odd at all.  However it wasn`t marked at all, so once again I didn`t buy it.  Mario, if you want it I will go buy it and send it to you !!
I did buy a silver wine goblet, marked "Rowell, Oxford and number 12137 !!  Knew I should not listen to you guys talking about stuff or I would wind up buying something I didn`t need !! LOL
