1940 Lane Cedar Chest With Picture Now
« on: April 15, 2011, 01:36:59 pm »
I have a 1940's Lane Cedar chest. I can't find anything on determining the value. It's missing one leg and is not in the best condition. I just ordered a replacement lock and keys because of a recall years ago. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks

Unfortunately that style has never been particularly popular !!  Price wise it might make $50. to $75. and that would be in good condition !!  Your area might be different though !!

Cool chest! I love chests and trunks. Lane cedar chests in beautiful condition go for about $100 in my area. I just sold mine that needed to be refinished and I had a hard time getting $25. And I am close to major cities. I think they are great, solid pices of furniture that are really awesome for storing all kinds of things. Unfortunately, yours is "waterfall" style (I believe) and it doesn't fit into people's decor very well today. I'd say to start at $50 if you decide sell it. Or, if you keep it, get 'er refinished and it will look brand new again. This is one of those styles that doesn't look very good all beat up/shabby chic style. Won't look good painted either. Good luck!

Oh, and in case you didn't already know this... Lanes have a serial number on the bottom of the trunk that you can email to the company to get the exact year it was made.

AND if you go to the site...they also will send you a new lock.  The old locks can close and suffocate a person or lock a child in.  So, get a free one.  They will verify serial number information.

Agree with others on value.....$35 - $50 is reasonable at this point in time....in good condition!

KC, Natalie mentioned that she ordered the new lock. ;)  I never ordered it for mine, lazy I guess. But I did tell the new owner several times that she needed to get it and not let little kids around it. I bet she didn't either. Although it probably already had it, it had a "floppy" lock on it. Hard to describe...

I would just remove the lock if one has small kids around. Even with a key, some little kid could get locked inside. Kids are curious.

With ours it wouldn't be a problem....there isn't any room for a kid much less anything else to get in it....you have to sit on it to close it!  LOL
