hannah barlow doulton lambeth cattle vase + bagdabs 1920s solid perfumes

hello! it took me a while to find an antique forum that's active, but here i'm looking for a little help identifying what is affectionately known as "the ugly cow vase" by my parents and i. when my grandmother died a few years ago this was adopted by my mother (my aunties wanted nothing to do with it and took all the things they thought were worth something ), and now we're wondering what *exactly* it is, and its worth.

i've found information on its creator, hannah barlow, and found pictures of other items with this cattle design on them, but nothing specifically about this shape and size (11.5"). if somebody could point me in the right direction i'd really appreciate it

edit - it occurred to me that i should probably post the other thing i've been researching - "bagdabs" solid perfumes. i've found some info on them: http://www.cleopatrasboudoir.com/apps/blog/show/3666085-edouardo-prochaska-perfumes- and a couple of places that they've sold, but those places didn't have prices. i don't know if the case they're in was original or just something somebody made for them (possibly leather but i really don't know), and it only has "110" written on the bottom in pencil. i've loved these since i was a kid




and i read somewhere they're made of bakelite, if that's true.

That is a nice vase, and if it is genuine, and no reason not to it certainly looks right, then it could be worth a few $$$.

i'd say that's the closest to the overall design? i keep finding similar but not exact ones, and it may not make much of a difference but it's nice to know about others that are the same. thank you for helping

and thank you too, i have that page bookmarked but as i said, it's not the same - i didn't realise when i started just how many items with the same basic design but variations between size/shape/colour there would be! lots of "ugly cow vases" out there lol

I think what one has to remember is that these vases were hand decorated by the artist and no two will be identical. You may never find an identical vase. The value lies in the maker or company, the artist, the quality of the decoration,the desirability of the decoration, the condition, and various other factors. That being said, the vase in the center is from kysfinest link and the vase on the right is from a live auctioneers auction in 2004. Information on that vase is...Doulton Lambeth stoneware vase with grazing cattle incised by Hannah Barlow in 1887. Marks include the Doulton Lambeth logo, the date, the artist's incised monogram and the marks of several stoneware assistants. Height 6 3/8 inches. There is a 1/8 inch glaze nick off the top edge of the rim. This vase sold for $950  http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/339205  They had a similar vase with sheep decoration that sold for $1000 in another auction.

The vase in kysfinest link is listed at 1000 pounds. With all the above information, I would think your vase would be worth in the range of $900-1500.  Your aunties evidently missed something of value. I think they mooved too fast in their haste and greed.

Regarding Bag Dabs, two recently sold on eBay for $34.60. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190509631084+&clk_rvr_id=231679176749  Although not identical. it should give you some sense as to what the demand and value currently is (12 bids). I would think a complete set like yours with the original? box and excellent decorations would be worth more than the sum of its parts. I would guess around $150.

my experience with antiques is limited (more of an admirer from afar), i wouldn't have guessed that there would be a chance of no two vases the same, even for hand produced work - makes me appreciate it even more that it's a little more unique and a little more lonely.

despite living next door to her and taking care of her we ended up with what was left and unloved, which we thought was fitting lol including the bagdabs, but that was happy for me because i'd grown up sniffing them and continually debating which of the designs was my favourite, as children do!

Your containers are very collectible!  I would gander that your set could see anywhere from $35 to $150 depending if collectors are looking and all are in pristine shape!

I can't help it......this one set me off!    Bagdabs  Every time  I read that all I could think of was bag balm/udder salve, which I've heard from many local people is great for chapped skin.

Had to go looking for them, just to make sure they were not bovine related

now that is a helpful bagdabs picture! i've only seen 2 of the types before (the other posted by wayward), and i don't know if these ones came in a set and would have come in a box described in that article, or if they were bought separately (two have rounded lids, the rest flat), but the container they're in isn't galilith - it's just a pretty and probably amateur box made of leather and a wood laminate(?) i completely forgot that there's a signature on the top that says "alba" which was covered by the flash. i'd looked it up in relation to bagdabs but didn't find anything, just another perfume maker. still, they're interesting little things!

here in aussieland there's a company called moogoo who sell "udder cream" as a moisturiser http://www.moogoo.com.au/moisturising-creams/udder-cream-skin-milk.html - it was originally used for their cows but now they make it for humans, even has the instructions for using it on cows on the back...

hmmm, come to think of it, perhaps the women who buy it should take offence
