Wood cabinet with no shelves (or brackets for shelves)
« on: May 29, 2011, 03:17:32 pm »
We are trying to figure out what this cabinet was used for, since it has no shelves and no shelve brackets.

Thank you in advance

Well, it can't be a gun case because it has no lock, it's the wrong shape to hold a dart board, what are the dimensions? It is sitting on a table, and looks to be maybe 2' tall? It could be a key cupboard. Look to see if there are any holes where there were once hooks.

Unfortunately, whatever it is, I doubt it is antique. Not only do I see no signs of age or wear, but the knobs are and hinges are attached with modern mass-produced Phillips-head screws.  :-\  The hinges also appear to be modern. I wish I had better news for you!

I agree with Tales, looks quite modern I'm afraid. Are there no signs at all inside where shelf fittings might go?

It could be that someone made or was making a reproduction "miniture".

The front of the doors imply "multi" paneled but the backs say "single" panel.

It looks to be well crafted ...... and made from Black Walnut.

As cogar says, 'well crafted', although I can't make out the timber .... . The mounting holes are there, so it's ready to hang !

It is quite odd that the cabinet appears to be well made when the mounting holes are totally exposed on the top. A much better place would have been inside the cabinet if the top piece would also extend down to the inside to serve as a structural mounting strip.

The grain looks too wide to be black walnut to me. I am thinking more of pine stained walnut.

Looks like a simple pine cabinet except the wood on the back appears to be birch plywood !! Could be that whoever built it was going to use glass shelves and just never finished it !! The brackets for those are usually put in after everything else is done !!

There aren't any holes inside for brackets to hold shelves.

It is 31" tall (34.5" if you count the top piece).

It is 5" deep

It is 16.5" wide.

There would not be holes if the maker didn`t put the brackets in !! They are usually added last !! Its just a small L shaped bracket that is screwed into the inside. Two brackets for left and two for right then the glass shelves rest on them !! There would be no holes until they are added at time of installation !!

Could it be cabinet to hold Torah scrolls?

Beyond that, I'm at a loss.

Or maybe they were going to use the slotted strips, 2 to a side, and did not put them in yet?  The strips are screwed to the sides after finishing.

What surprises me is the fact that there are no screw holes or markings. If I were making this thing everything would be measured out, marked and even pilot holes drilled when the boards were flat on the bench ... a lot easier than trying to get it right once the piece was finished.

Y'know what... I think this is may be a dart board cabinet, although it seems a bit narrow. Run a search on google images for dart board cabinet. There are a whole lot of similar ones. I thought they were more square, but there are plenty of rectangular ones.
I guess I should spend more time in bars and saloons...

"A regulation board is 17 3⁄4 inches (451 mm)[3] in diameter and is divided into 20 radial sections." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darts

This cabinet is only 16.5" wide and I am not sure that was even an inside dimension. This too narrow for a regulation dartboard so I do not think that is what it was made for unless they did not follow the age old advice of "measure twice, cut once" before construction.

What is that little piece of wood in the upper right hand corner, on the inside? Also, if you sit back away from the screen a bit, the first picture appears to have straight lines on the inside. Like there were shelves at some point, of some sort. There are changes in color in the finish on the inside. Maybe had some sort of shelves that weren't held in place by screws? ???
