Antique Cabinet with Copper Bin
« on: June 22, 2011, 09:10:54 pm »
I just purchased a cabinet with a copper bin in the top.  It's about 44"W x 48H.  Has double doors and 3 glass shelves inside.  I am curious what it was originally used for, whether it is Amer. or Euro. and the age.

It looks to me as if there may have originally been a base to this? Photo of the interior with the basin would also be useful..

A copper bin usually implies a tobacco stand/chest.

Is the copper bin located in the top and does the top lift up to gain access to the copper bin? If so, then it may have had short legs at one time but most probably not a base.

Humidor perhaps?

Can you please post a pic of the bottom and backsides?  This may help clear up some pending questions!

A picture of the copper bin would be helpful, I am not clear on where it is in the cabinet since you described it is "in" the top rather than "on" the top.

Antique Cabinet with Copper Bin

Hello,

Having trouble sending message, hope this works.  I had inquired about this cabinet before but only had one pic at the time.  I am sending different views as some had requested.

I recently purchased an Oak Cabinet with a rather shallow (4 1/2" deep) Copper Bin in the top.  It has glass doors and glass shelves (3) inside with many brackets for shelf placement.  It measures 39W x 47 1/2H x 14D.  I am curious to know if anyone knows what this cabinet was originally built for.  There are no signs that the top ever had a hinged lid over the copper.  Someone suggested a humidor but it is not airtight and no copper inside the cabinet itself.  Also wondering if it is European or American.

The pictures are of the front, back, inside and the copper bin.

Thanks for any insight you might have!

Marilyn

Just in case anyone is wondering...I have removed the earlier post from 6pmish as it was a duplicate of the above later 10pm post. I had merged the previous two threads but just got another separate topic post on this that I merged again.

Your cabinet is a very odd piece !!  It is in no particular style other than the doors that look a bit on the French Provincial side. You can still buy the appliques on the front and I am wondering if they were attached with a brad nailer ?? I do not think it is particularly old as the hardware looks new,, but rather dates from the 70`s !! The mirror on top does not look like it belongs with the cabinet. It is rather small and makes it look unbalanced and from what I can see is darker than the cabinet.  The back looks more aged than the cabinet itself but if it were exposed to sunlight it might darken . I am wondering if someone took a piece and modified it for their own specific purpose. Possibly to use in a sunroom and the copper bin was to set potplants in ?? The cabinet probably had a base of some sort either with legs or a cabinet style with doors.
