German Night Candles
« on: June 27, 2011, 07:56:47 pm »
How much would something like this be worth?

It's a full box of night candles from 1908.  They appear to be German.

What exactly was their use?  They look like small wicks that float on top of oil?  I haven't been able to find much on them...

Boy, aren't those tiny! I would suspect it was something used in a church service at Christmas like today but that is just a guess. No idea as to value but the original box would be desirable to collectors.

These are great and I love the box! Do the little candles sit on top of that metal piece (candle holder) with the date? I see these tiny little candles and candle holders at Walmart, I thought they were some new fad but apparently not!

Yes, I forgot to mention.  The bottom of the metal dated piece is cork.

The cork is an insulator of the metal because with a melting candle, the metal would get too hot to hold without it.

The metal pieces are marked with the company names that are on the box GF and GAG. These must have been made as centennial pieces for the company?

You are right.  G.A. Glafey seems to still be around http://www.glafey.com/

"Since 1808, the company Glafey produced at its plant in Nuremberg. Glafey products, such as our night lights and tea lights are produced for decades in an unchanged form and quality. By using high quality raw materials and their processing with some of its own, special manufacturing methods, we achieve a consistent high quality."

So it's their centennial.

here is a newer version of the same product.   http://cgi.ebay.ca/MADE-GERMANY-FLOATING-MINI-CANDLES-G-A-GLAFEY-MIP-/400222342497?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d2f1c4d61#ht_744wt_1139

Floating mini candles in salad oil? I have never heard of that. Learn something new on here all the time.
