Help in identification.....brass lamp??
« on: June 27, 2011, 08:38:11 pm »
Hi All, Just a new member. ;D

Recently I've just inherited a few items, and need help in identifying this one.

I think it is a brass multi-wick open flame oil lamp....but not sure. Maybe whale oil lamp?? I'm not sure how it works....or even if it does or would.

There are no dates or stamps etc. on the item to help me identify the age.

The hanging part at the bottom is an odd shape, so not sure what that part is for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

India Export Brass most likely, Looks 70's in era, as a overall guess.   I would doubt it to whale oil lamp, Looks Tea candle like  Whale oil would date it to a period well before  Victorian or Pre Victorian in style, If any early age maybe Art Deco, which really feel back in to flavor in the 70's  :o  :o  :o .  Anyway lots of indian brass items around and they still have lots of a Clientel Base, but value is low.

Thanks for the info.....I just wasn't sure what it was!

Not sure about the tea candle part......can't get one to fit in the centre at all, the openings are too small.

It's definately had a liquid in it at some stage as the dust has stuck to and is really thick on those parts.

Would have to agree that it looks like it holds coned incense that I have seen from the late 60's to 70's time period.

Could also be an outdoor lamp intended to burn mosquito repellant. Bottom part possibly a weight to keep it straight in a breeze or a drip catcher ??

Thanks for all the responses  ;D

I've done some more research, as I wasn't content with it being an insence burner or lamp for mosquito repelent  ;)

For anyone who is interested, I've since found out that it is a brass grease/fat lamp!

Thanks again for your help!

You know.....I could see it as one....but I wouldn't use it.  Most have more covered areas ....this would be extremely dangerous.  Seems like something is missing!

KC, if you Google "brass grease lamp" or something similar, a number of lamps come up that are equally dangerous. Probably why there were many house fires in the 1600-1800s.
