Depression Glass
« on: July 08, 2011, 04:48:42 pm »
Hi.  I am looking to buy a genuine pink depression glass stick butter dish, with a lid.  I accidentally broke my grandmother's dish at a family gathering several years ago.  She says it's ok, but I feel terrible, and I have been looking for one for years.  I understand pink depression glass is rare, as is a stick butter dish.  Double wammy!  All I can find are replicas.  Please point me in the right direction!  Thank you very much!

Ironlord should be able to help you as that is his specialty. I would think he will be along at some point tonight or this weekend. Pink depression glass is not rare. Quite common. A butter dish in a certain pattern may be a different story.

Yea I love Pink Depression Glass.  First we need to know the pattern name.  Replacements would be the first place to look once you have the pattern name, that is if you wish to pay preimum price.  If not can you get a pic of the bottom of the dish, then we can find the name.  Pink Glass is not really rare, what will make it rare is the pattern.  I have a couple other sources possible to find you a Dish.

Off the top of my head Jeannette Glass Company produced a butter dish rectangular in pink - pattern  Honeycomb, Hocking Glass co. pattern block optic, Federal Glass co. pattern Hex optic.  all rectangular & all in pink. Pink glass is not really rare as Ironlord said but most butter dishes you will find in depression glass will be round.   good luck :)

I have seen several of the stick types in pink !!  Most of the repro`s will be in the most commonly collected patterns !!  I usually find tops but no bottoms !!  Did you break both pieces ??

Yes, both pieces broke.  I don't know if my grandmother kept the pieces or not, and I can't remember the pattern.  I'm willing to buy any pattern, as long as it's authentic.  She is not expecting anything, so I think she'd be ok with it not being exactly the same.

I don't think it was floral.  It seems like it was a simple pattern; not real busy.  I'm sorry I don't know more.  I can call my grandmother in the morning, to see if she remembers.

I'm sure we can find a pink depression dish for you if pattern is not important.  Just a bit of a note about depression Glass.  First you have Depression Glass, then you have Depression era Glass, and now it seem that some vintage Glass is being called Depression Glass.  True Depression Glass is made up of about 90 different patterns.  True Depression glass was made in the 20's and  30's, Glass makers had just learned how to make Cheap Glass, and this Glass was usually given away at Theaters, Stores, and Soap Boxes.  The ideal was a Theater or Store would buy a bunch of Glass usually the same pattern, and when you came to visit, they would give you another piece of Glass, in hopes you would come back and try and collect the whole set.  Depression era Glass was glass usually more elegant and was sold during the depression era, but not cheap give away glass, and now it would seem that some glass that was made in the 50's and 60's has been getting called depression glass.  Just thought I would give you this little tid bit.  I will go look around and see what patterns are available online and maybe give you a ideal of some of the patterns that are out there.

It appears Wendy is correct, just went through all my Depression books and say no examples of Depression era Stick style Butter dishes, and it appears many Patterns never made a butter pate dish either.  Could not find one on Ebay either, many that are getting called Depression, but not true depression.  The ones that do appear are Butter / Chesse Pate Dishes ( Round ).  Just added another tidbit to me noggin Thanks Wendy.  When did the Butter stick appear ? , the more I thought about it, Butter was still a Round Pound in the 20's and 30's.   I might have to ask about it at a Glass forum I know about,  if intrested I will add the link.   I don't post there but just love there gallery ( would want anyone to think I'm two timing on another forum  ;);D

Finally found a Depression Glass butter dish, Jeanette Cubist was made in the square dish pattern, even in pink.  Found one for sale for $50.00 plus $12.00 shipping on Go Antiques.   They do seem to be far a few between, wendy mentioned some other patterns, haven't found any of them yet.  One keeps coming up from Hazel Atlas, but not a true depression pattern.

Kam, you should check if your grandma has another piece of that same pink glass. If not, and she was using that butter dish for everyday purposes then it probably didn't hold any precious memories, thus a repo in most any pattern would please her just as easily as an original copy.

Thanks Ironlord did not know about Jeanette  making one in Cubist pattern!!  With a little digging found Jeannette glass also made a rectangular butter in a line called "Jenny Ware" found this one on line & the price is high but as I said rectangular butter dishes are hard to come by!!!!!!      http://www.kandmantiques.com/servlet/Categories?category=Depression+Glass%3AJeannette&s=25 Personally I would not purchase this one as I can not be sure it is the real deal the information I have shows Jenny Ware Only making it in Green with  the word BUTTER on the lid & no mention of Pink.  Would need to do more research to see if it was indeed produced in pink without the word  BUTTER  on the lid.

I called my grandmother, and she has another piece.  She said the pattern is ribbed, but there is nothing on the bottom.  And after reading some of these answers, I'm not sure if what she has is genuine, and I don't know how to find out for sure.  But I would love to find a replacement butter dish for her, anyway.

Kam the best way to find out if your grandmothers piece was genuine would be to get a photo of her other piece that matched her butter dish and post it here, That way we can research the pattern & see what time frame it was made & by what company. glass can be very hard to track but many members here have very old literature of company information on makers, patterns & photos.
