Pepsi Cola Porcelain Sign
« on: July 27, 2011, 05:55:09 pm »
This sign was given to me and I have no idea if it is original or a reproduction. If anyone has any information about the sign it would be greatly appreciated.  :)

Made from porcelain
Double Sided
Two holes at the bottom

This probably sat on top a double-sided wire stand that had cartons of 6 Pepsi bottles on both sides. If it is heavy and well finished, I would guess it is original. I would look for tiny print anywhere on it that says it was made somewhere else. Lacking that disclaimer, it is original.

The only other type that is on the sign is   REG. U.S. PAT. OFF.

So many of these signs are reproduced now and sold at flea markets that I would not even guess !!

I'm thinking this may be a reproduction ::)

Though not the same slogan, it's extremely similar in looks.......

Sapphire, the sign in question is porcelain and double-sided whereas the one on eBay is stamped out like all the newer repros. BIG difference.

I would like to know the dimensions and a pic of the other side. If legit, this would date in the 1940s or even the 30s.

Exact one on Worthpoint in 2007...http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/15-34-x-6-tall-take-home-carton-pepsi-double-dot-display-rack-sign-double-sided-early

I think the rack would have been similar to this Coke Take Home a Carton wire rack...

http://www.gono.com/museum2003/museum%20collect%20info/briefhistoryofpepsicola.htm

"In 1951, a logo change from two dots, or a semi-colon, between the words "Pepsi" and "Cola" (double dot), to one dot, or a period (single dot), was made."

http://www.antiquebottles.com/pepsi/

"The words "Pepsi" and "Cola" were separated by two dashes (called double dot) until 1951 when the modern logo with a single dash was introduced."

http://www.pepsiusa.com/faqs.php?section=history_of_the_pepsi_cola_logo

"1943: The logo incorporates a "bottle cap" look."

Definitely working the way back in time now.    ;)

Hey all. Thanks for all the information.  ;D

The other side of the sign is a bit more dinged up. The picture at worthpoint seems to be exactly the same as the one i have, down too were the top of the sign is rounded and the bottom os it are rounded.

The dimensions are: 15.75 width and just under 6 inches tall.

Hmmm, size is the same as the Worthpoint example. I would have to say it is original.
