It was just in an old cigar box of stuff along with a few other items like old pipe smoking accessories.

I am flogging off what I can, all proceeds to my mother.  I would offer it to you with pleasure, but I am in the UK and am sure that the postage would outweigh any value.

Well,, location did not help with ID !!  Thanks, but i am sure you are right !!  And with 2 good size gardens, 6 horses, a hubby and other creatures that take a lot of time, I don`t get to paint any more !!  Hopefully someone will know what it is when they see it on ebay !! Let us know if you find out !!

Believe it or not I initially thought it was part of a victorian cigarette holder - with pieces missing!  They were made out of very fine metals and woods.....and some were even retractable!  Hmmmmm
I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

Unfortunately, as you've said, M&C don't seem to be listed in all the usual places, otherwise you could possibly establish what it was. At only 3g (incredibly light) it must be very small, so would not have been a dipping pen. I would be tempted to ho;d on to it, even with silver prices being quite high, at 1/10 oz the scrap value for this little item would be very little, so I would hold on to it and treat it as a curio.

Nice discovery! Does your "ink nib" slide back into the silver tube like the eBay toothpick one?

Yes it does!

Another one for you:

They seem to be all over the place once you know what to call them!  I am keeping mine as it is incomplete and scrap value wouldn't cover postage.

I fixed your link, "ht" was missing from the beginning. Why not list it on ebay as is? It seems the only thing missing is the cap and ring. Great discovery on your part! learned something new. I never thought of it as a toothpick because the nib does not resemble one.

Oops, thanks for the fix, sorry about that.

Maybe it will end up on ebay when I get time.  It is quite likely to get lost!
