Persian 17C wooden spoons with bronze ornaments
« on: August 29, 2011, 08:21:45 pm »
Hi all,
I'm glad I found this forum, because from what I read here, it seems like there is lots of knowledgeable about antique values.
I went randomly to a swap meet and I bought a pair of very pretty decorative wooden spoons. The seller said they were brought to the USA by an aviation kernel during the World War ll. They were made in Persia in the 17C. They are huge measuring Large spoon - 21.5’’, Small spoon – 14.5’’.
I wondered if anyone has any idea of the value?

Thanks!
Maria

Way cool spoons for sure.  Point one is with out markings to prove the date then we are talking hear say on the date.  Which I would be surprised by these being that old for sure personnally.  17c would me pre colonial in age, making them 400+ years old, most items that are truely that old are in Musuems and high end private colloctors diplays.  But again anything is possible, to prove it to a potiental buyer will be another issue.  The second point is they do not appear to be functionally spoons, and made more decorative in nature, all the fillagre and metal work to make it well, lets just say I would hate to be the servant that would have to wash such a item.  Which during that age not much items was made for decorative purposes, unless you was a high end Royal person.   I would not doubt they were brought back in the mid century era, but if I saw them in a shop, I would say Early to mid century tourist items.  I am not sure I could put a good value on the item personally, but maybe some else can help a bit more, my guess would be low for sure.  But this is out of my expertise, but I thought I would just add my thoughts.  Thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting these items , mariavelika .

They don't seem to be antique Persian items to my tired eyes .... never seen 17C solder look so fresh (from seeing your images) !

Without holding your items in hand , I'd think that a date in the 20th century might be closer to truth , with brass elements soldered together (Lge spoon lathe-turned) .

At first glance they brought to mind some sort of ceremonial object.......such as serving mass, though possibly I just got that from the appearance of a cross on the smaller as the larger has the same bands but more of them. Trying to get a better look at the decoration by playing with it right now, but am I seeing a double eagle? (third pic, end of the smaller spoon is clearest) Rather interesting hanging chain on that spoon too, more intricate than I would expect to see on a lower end/decorative item.

Cool to see though, a lot of detailed work there.

There appears to be a crest/medallion missing from the back of the larger bowled one.
