Not quite right Fenton
« on: September 12, 2011, 02:51:33 pm »
OK Guys. At ironlord's request here is my Fenton piece I found at a goodwill. I am not a glass collector but I seen the circled Fenton and picked it up for $3.99. It wasn't until I got it home that I noticed the flaw. Pretty obvious now though. I am guessing cranberry in color but I really am clueless. Just thought I'd share this with you all.

Yea not sure this is a Fenton, Will have to look through a few books when I get home from work, unless someone "Sapphire"  beats me too it  :P .   Yes I would call this cranberry glass, but does not quite look art glass enough for fenton.  Thanks for posting

If you don't mind my asking: What is the obvious flaw? I would love to know.

I would agree with Ironlord that it doesn't look quite artsy enough to be Fenton.  Try to post the mark if you can.

Ok ironlord here's the mark you wanted. This is why I thought it was a Fenton. Maybe I'm wrong lol.

Wow That sure looks like a legit mark for Fenton.  Guess I got my work cut out for me after work looking around.  Could be a fake mark, but usually not many fake Fenton's , just not valueable enough for that.

Thanks for the info. It is a pretty vase. I can't wait to see this mystery unravel.

I would assume it's one of their newer pieces ( but I've been wrong once or twice lol ) but just how common is it to see such an obvious flaw? Or were they just not caring anymore? I'm anxiously waiting for your report on the piece ironlord. I have faith in you! Thanks

Factory "seconds" or sub-standard pieces were sold in the Fenton Gift Shop. Fenton has always released factory seconds. These items were not in mint condition from the start, making them less desirable for collectors. I believe this is what you have. It  also looks as if your piece has a small 8 under the logo this would indicate your piece was made during the 80s. Fenton used this oval mark beginning in 1970, and later added the "8" to denote the 1980s. Subsequent decades were marked "9" for 1990s and "0" for 2000.
I would still hang on to this piece since no more art glass will be made by Fenton.

O.k. in my second book I found the name.  It is called Honeycomb (Bubble Optic).  They only mention it being made in Blue optix, and Green overlay.  But it is for sure what you have.  These was made in 1951 - 1953, that is the Blue and Green ones.  As mentioned by wendy, if if has this mark it was made post 1972, this is when this mark was being used.  This was probably made with the Honeycomb mold post 1980's, However the one in the picture does not have the "Flaw".  I still have two more books to look through maybe it will give me a bit more.

Correction, it appears there is a 8 under the logo, which wendy is right 1980's would be the date, 9 would be 90's and so on.
