New Forum: "For Sale"?
« on: September 16, 2011, 07:56:28 pm »
Anyone think this is an OK Idea?

We could delete the posts X days after they are posted. (maybe a month or three?)

What do you think? any ideas to add?

thanks!

I'd first wonder if you've got enough server space (provided that it's 'free-to-post') for an onslaught , Ed ....

Then , secondly ... would the Mod have to police it (spam/scam/irs/porn & other such fun stuff ....) ?

There is that "Shop Search" section of the Web site. Maybe that area could be expanded to include a separate forum for items for sale that would remain separate? As RJ2 mentioned, it might come under siege, but it at least would be separated from the research portion of the Web site.

I also think that you could charge a buck per ad & be a rich man ....

.... or maybe just have some well-earned jingle for keeping & having such a great site !

I think it would be a good idea if it's kept in a separate section like tales mentioned. But I also think that sellers should have to contribute to the forum, maybe have a minumum of 50-100 posts or something like that. I think the site would become over run with greedy, rude sellers who just want free advertising which would hurt the site, in my opinion. So, I could see it being fun if it were done right. After all, if it gets out of control you could always remove it. ;)

Could be a good idea but would need to be limited to certain number of items total and maybe on a per month basis !!  Say 5 items per post and three listings per month per member !! Not that any regular members would take advantage but you would find those that join only for listing priviledges and contribute nothing otherwise !!

I like reading the old posts. You can still learn from them. Is there a way you could keep only the really good posts and maybe get rid of the smaller posts that aren't that informitive.

I personnally am kind of torn on the issue of items for sale.  Being a seller, I would love it but not sure the issues that will and can come from this will be good for the forum overall.  Like mentioned earlier, would have to be only offered to like full members that have and are active in posting and helping the site.  Limited number would also be a good ideal, cause I just might have to add 10 every day. this could get a bit over welming.  Then another issue not mentioned yet, would be after the item is sold, If I post it here to help get traffic to my Ebay, and it sell, something would have to made in real time to list it as "sold".  I would think this would be lots of work for you Ed, and you may have to have a couple of trusted Moderators to help maintain this.  I will go with the flow on this one.    I would like to see maybe a better Research page, a page that would have all the links we come up with to help research.  Or another one would be a gallery of indentified items to help with research.  However the latter one may require lots of memory.  These are just my thought on the ideal.

My thought is that if it would help offset the cost of maintaining the site (more traffic thus ad revenue) then I am all for it.  A strict "no sales on the Question forum" policy along with a committed moderator would maintain the integrity of the forum.  Sure there would be "what is it" questions here while selling over there or other fishing for interest schemes but you never know until you try.

It could always be undone....

A last comment would be that I've just really enjoyed the forum for as long as I've been a member ....

Usually smooth sailing here on the forums , so I'd rather keep the Good Ship Lollypop just the way it's been going (successfully !) .

Or maybe I am just an ole stick-in-the-mud ....

My opinion? -- everyone here keeps referring people to eBay or other sales sites.  This is a realistic option, because eBay seems to be driving market prices anyway!  So if everyone decides on not having a "for sale" section, it's not like vendors are without options.

But I think you DO have an opportunity to make some money while retaining the integrity of the forum, so here's my suggestion:

1 -- Charge a fairly prohibitive fee for people who just want to sell their goods.  Say, $15 per item.  This will prevent sellers from just flooding the board with dozens of items, or even the same item dozens of times.  Make this section of the board so that posts aren't automatic, but must "await moderator approval".  That way you can verify payment and suitability of the item for sale (no need to pass a 2001 Nissan Altima, for example), before allowing it through.

2 -- Indicate that sales need to be conducted off the board, the board does not warrant/guarantee/blah-blah-blah, etc.

3 -- Use the terms of service to indicate that "for sale" posts will be monitored by regular board members, who may publicly comment on condition, price, authenticity, etc.

4 -- Offer a lower price for regular board members, say $1 or $2.  Now this is where it gets tricky.  What's a regular board member?  If you set it by number of posts, you're going to have some people who post just to get the discount, and we'll see a hundred miles of posts from "XYZ Vendor" saying "I agree, that's Victorian" and "I agree, that's the right price."  Perhaps a voting system? -- if someone applies to be a Preferred Vendor (let's call it), the board can comment on the person's suitability.  This will hopefully ensure that only people who have proven their commitment and know-how become Preferred Vendors.  (Or, instead of public comment/vote system, perhaps a small board of four or five regular members, who volunteer to do it?)

5 -- Offer free selling to a small number of regular posters who volunteer to moderate the boards.  Then you get free help, as well!

just some ideas.

I am torn on this one.

Just like we get lots of "fake" antique and vintage items....you will see fakes sold here if it isn't policed...and I think that could affect the outstanding reputation of the site!  That is definitely my biggest concern.  Also the spam.  AND do you want this to end up being a garage sale or a true antique/vintage sales site?

If it could somehow bring in $$$ for you Ed...I say it's your baby...you have footed this for a very long time much to mine and others' pleasure!!!
