really cool (old?) brass door handle... church?

Hi everybody.. we had a big day at they antique shops and we found this and had to have it. no idea if its old or how old it is but for the price I have a door it will look great on. its brass cast and I figured it might have come off a church door, measures 4" x 18" and has no makers mark, but there are a set of serial numbers on the back i have no idea how to trace. hardware looks modernish on the back but not really sure.Thanks for looking!!

heres a side view if that helps.. they age really appears genuine, and Im guessing it JUST came off what ever door it had spent its life mounted too. Let me know what ya think

Looks great !!  Can`t say it looks like a church though !!  Just put the serial numbers in google and see if anything comes up !!

Really nice! Are you going to install it on your front door? I have a knob set sitting in a drawer that I have been meaning to install. This would be a good one for the project topic if you're going to do an install.  ;D

thanks mart,I tried that already and didnt come up with anything.. didnt really know if it was off a church or not, took an uneducated guess  ::) its really ornate and rather large, and the detail is really something.. Tales- its not gonna work on the door I wanted it to so were goin to hunt down a new door just so we can put this handle on it lol, and yes, Il make sure to document they install! anyone got a guess on they age or origin? old government building maybe?

83586 is the only number on it other than 4x18 which is the size, 83586 could just be the number of the cast used by the foundry too

Id just love to find out something about it, just hope the history lives up to the mystery lol. gonna talk to the shop owner tomorrow and see what I can find out about it.

It almost reminds me of a nautical theme going on with the ships wheel thing. But the detail in the handle is so nice! I'll dig around a bit and see if I can come up with something. Don't hold your breath though.  ;)

I wonder if that might have come off a stateroom door from a ship??  Lovely design and unless unintentional, looks to be nautical related.

Just another thought......that hole looks too large to accommodate a doorknob. More likely a deadbolt type lock. Anyone know offhand when those were invented??

Thanks snowflake!! that at least gives me an idea what i have, same general form!! I went to they antique store but I couldnt get any info from where it was from so its still a mystery.. thats half the fun of it though! ;)

You're welcome. I was having better luck looking under "entry door pull" or exterior door backplate. blah blah....but couldn't find yours. Then I stumbled across websites that sold old and restored hardware and got lost in it for an hour or so! Came across another site that just reminded me of the things you find and make projects out of:
