Think this picture is worth looking into?
« on: October 12, 2011, 01:42:41 pm »
I am going through all the picture and frames that were in boxes out back and came across one of a family member. When I took it out there was some type of print behind it. It is on a piece of thick paper. There is gold all around it that doesn't look like paint. Is it a print? Litho? And does anyone know about the gold tone? Do you think I should look into it?

I found a really neat b&w photo with some lovely antiques in it that I am going to post in a reply here. Just because I think it's awesome.   ;)

I always thought the woman in this picture was a family friend. But she has a picture on her desk (the military one) of a family member. Infact I have this exact picture. Maybe she is family (my husband's side). I'll have to get on the phone and find out. I have a painting by her as well. Anyway, check out the massive vase thing behind her, the cabinet, the statue and doll. Had to share this neat stuff.

I have been trying to figure out what the picture is, so I can find it. Am on on the right track with this being a chromolithograph? Is the instrument an angelica (Italian) from the lute family?

ETA It is an archlute!

Might be on to something. The people in this one look similar. Or is it just me?

Snow...  I have to admit, I am terribly lost here.

Where is the archlute in your picture? Altho you solved that mystery  ;D
But which pic are you asking about being a chromo? Is it a picture in the photo of the nun or the photo itself?

Sorry for being so lost!

I am bad for that, Oceans! Sorry.  :(

The first post. The one with the woman and cherub/cupid playing the instrument.

Cool pieces, snowflake!  I was planning on researching these types of items, too, as I just got a couple of similar oval old photo prints of some sort.  I'll keep this topic in mind & post them here, with any info I may find out!

SF - It was me not you!!  I didn't scroll down far enough...  Never made it past the photo and the vase. Alot going on in that pic  ;D

So you are wondering if the cherub is a chromo? To tell for sure you need a magnifying glass and good light.  The color dots will be irregular. http://chicagoantiquesguide.com/archives/20060216135609.php is a good resource.  Not sure if it's the pic, but most examples of chromos that I have seen are vibrant in their colors.

Chromos were used alot for advertising and replicating fine art. It generally fell out of favor by the early 1900's when cheaper more efficient machines were used. Again, generally speaking, your print would need to be dating from around 1860-1910ish.

This is just briefly off the top of my head but I'll look around a bit more later. In the meantime, have you looked at it with a magnifying glass?

ETA: Also...  Is this black and white or does is have color? Color = chomolithograph - B&W=lithograph

I'll try again. My picture was too big. Thanks for the info, Oceans. I guess it's not a chromolitho. It's definitely not a poster, it is on some type of thick paper board.
Here are some pictures that might help, and it shows the gold I was talking about too.

Spent some time looking for more info but I came up short. IMO I think this is old and an original lithograph*, at least that is what I would call it.  How old, I can't say nor did I come close to finding an artist with the exception of William-Adolphe Bouguereau (November 30, 1825 – August 19, 1905). Very prolific artist however, I'm sure others were doing the same thing.

Also refreshed my memory on lithographs vrs chromo's.  It seems most use the term lithograph whether it is color or B&W and chromolithograph is reserved for lithographs that are printed in color (vrs painted over?) Some conflicting info out there for sure and lots of generalities.  My several years of latin roots in high school makes me stick with chromolithography = pertaining to color lithography  ;D

*The term original lithograph makes me smile a little bit since really, when you break it down, it's an old print of an original painting. What is cool is the technique and someday I would love to see how they did it!! What really makes me  ;D is how on eBay there are umpteen sellers selling prints of an original lithograph. So basically they are selling a photocopy of a print of an original  ::)  I tell you, Americans will buy anything!!  ;D

LOL! You're amazing, Oceans. Thank you! I find all these 'prints' so confusing. I thought it must have been a chromolith because of the gold all over it. Other than that there is no color. But I agree with you. Probably a lithograph. I searched all over and did not find it anywhere. Oh well, I like it and will hang it up in the hall. One day I might find out who did it. Years ago I was searching for my antiques and had nothing! Then got tired of it. Decided to try again this year and found things that weren't there then.

You know, I have ignored the fact it was gold speckled (tho I still think it's a lithograph)...  Will have to think about that.

Is there anyway this was once a Valentine?

I inspected the edges and can't tell if it was cut to size. If it was, they were experts at it. LOL. I keep thinking maybe it came in the frame like they do now.  ;)
There are so many prints here because my husbands Great aunt took art lessons. I guess she bought old print booklets and things to go by. Some look old, some newer. Trying to find out what ones I can pitch and what ones to hold on to! I have to force myself to keep going through it all because I have to purge and no one else wants it!
