C.S. Bell & Co. Advice needed!
« on: October 12, 2011, 02:08:37 pm »
Hello guys! I got this beauty from goodwill. As you can see, it's a #1 bell from C.S> Bell & Co. I know they still make & sell these. This one looks pretty old however. I plan on putting this on ebay but wanted some reassurance to my thoughts. My thoughts are to leave it as is instead of cleaning it up and painting it. I thought it would be better to show it's age. I know they sell them already painted so I figured this must be an old one to have no paint at all on it. Maybe I'm wrong. But c'mon guys, give me your opinion on this. Leave it as it is or clean it up and paint it. Thanks in advance.

For sure if you are going to sell it makes sense to leave as is.  The buyer may like the old look or wish to restore it themselves.

My vote, keep as is.  Most people want to refinish themselves if they want it refinished!

Agree with mart....Rust is in.  You can take classes to make things looks rusty!  Turn back time and tell people that!  LOLOLOL

It's hard to tell age on something that they have never quit making. But in my opinion, yours looks to be older. Are the new ones still marked with the Ohio address? I know the C.S. Bell company is still in business, but I thought they sold off the "bell" division years ago.

Here is a quote from Prindle Station "A Prindle Station farm bell is a genuine C.S. Bell Company bell, cast from Mr. Bell's original 1886 patterns. The durability and quality is proven by the number of the original bells that still ring throughout the United States." But the measurements are a little different than the ones on this bell, for example the newer bells are 13 3/4" but this one measures 14 3/8". So one would assume this is from an early mold, right? Thanks for all the help.
