What are these Pots Called
« on: October 14, 2011, 11:56:55 am »
O.k. I need a bit of help on what are these Pots Called and possible information on use.  I picked this up at the Auction Last Weekend, it was titled as a Hondes Pot, but when looking that up all I get is Honda stuff.  Would like to know a name for this kind of Pot.  It is  made of a Stoneware or Natual Clay material, this one is 7" Long Handle to Handle, Stands 5" Tall.  Also what is the purpose of the rings, is it to hand over a fire?

From what I gather the Honde are a tribe. I am trying to find out where. Somewhere near Zimbabwe? Have to check. There is a pot with a ring here but no info. You'll have to scroll about 1/3 down page. Still looking...

Kinda looks terra cotta mat'l , from here ....

Perhaps an oil storage jar , or , in the event there are 'lid' marks on the jug , maybe an oil lamp (just guessing) ?

They are pots to cook. Ironlord, I think your right about the rings. For some reason this Tarzan movie keeps coming to my mind. Of course it took place in Africa, lol They boiled this man in oil. They were huge version of your small pot. I know that sounds funny, lol I read an atricle that said even sweets were made in them.

Were rings placed on pots to hold/hang it over a fire?

Not saying it is yours, no rings but the coloring seems similar. My eyes are not that great anymore:

Yea I sure this is not Pre Columbian for sure, and as for it being used for Cooking Looking inside I would say this is more Decorative then useful.  Most likely a tourist sort of item from somewhere.   I just have seen this style of Pot from time to time and thought they would have some name to help me tag the item.  I have put this item on the back burner per say for now and will get back to it later, Hopefully I can find the name.
