Old Sculpture of Pitcher with Cherubs
« on: April 08, 2003, 02:43:16 pm »
Please help me with some information about this old scroll pitcher.  I think it is probably made of plaster of paris, it weighs about 7 pounds. It's gracefully adorned with 4 cherubs around the middle of the pitcher. The handle is beautifully scrolled.

It measures about 16" high.
16" around base.
17" around which includes the handle.

The elderly lady that I got it from said that she thinks it is over 100 years old.
Would appreciate any information as to the worth, and anything else you could offer about it.
Note that it is a solid sculpture and does not hold liquid.
A minor repair appears to made on the spout, but is not really that noticable.

I have pictures on a webpage for viewing.

Thank you

This shape is generally called an "Ewer".  We would assume that this is a decorative piece only and wasn't really intended for use with liquids because of what appears to be a porous material.  It has what is referred to as a "majolica" decoration (raised, not flat).  If the piece is marked on the bottom by a famous maker, the value could be in the hundreds.  Unmarked, we would expect to see a piece such as this go at auction for around $50.00-$100.00, without damage or repairs.  Any repair of damage on a porcelain/plaster/china, etc., normally lowers the value by 1/2.   Keep in mind, though, that auction values are normally 1/3 - 1/2 of retail.   Hope this helps!
